Canals in the West Midlands could become the freight highways of the future.
A feasibility study of using canals around Birmingham highlighted the potential to re-introduce freight transport.
Now local businesses are being approached to develop the project further.
West Midlands Planning and Transportation sub-committee chairman Cllr Len Gregory said: ‘The study identified opportunities for transporting bulk materials, such as construction materials and aggregates.
