More than 60 gardeners are facing eviction from land in Somerset that has been an allotment site for over 100 years.

The owner of Combe Down Allotments notified Bath and North East Somerset Council earlier in the year that they intended on terminating the council’s lease at the end of November 2025.

There are currently 64 allotments on the site, which has been used for allotments since 1894.

Cllr Tim Ball, cabinet member for Neighbourhoods, described the decision as ‘hugely disappointing’.

‘We have explored all options to save Combe Down Allotments and we are continuing to do so. This has included exploring any statutory acquisition powers for the site,’ he said.

‘We have also requested meetings with the landowner to understand why he wants the council to vacate the land. Unfortunately, all requests to meet have, to date, been declined through his solicitor.’
