Frome Town Council in Somerset this week became the third UK authority to declare a housing ‘crisis’, amid soaring rents and local property shortages.
Cllr Polly Lamb, who proposed the formal declaration, said rent hikes are ‘pushing out local people who have been here all their lives’.
Residents are also concerned that wealthy Londoners have bought second properties in the area, which sit empty for months and restrict housing supply.
South Hams DC and Leicester City Council previously declared similar crises.
