Firestone Building Products

Firestone Building Products is set to increase its share of the UK commercial linings sector after opening up direct supply channels with major contractors and establishing a new European stockholding base for its GeoGard™ EPDM lining membrane.

The company sells its PondGard™ EPDM lining for residential and smaller landscaping schemes through distributors and will continue to do so. However, a new strategy for its commercial GeoGard product has seen the company establish a stockholding base in Rotterdam, facilitating direct sales to construction and civil engineering contractors thanks to a fast turnaround on lower quantities of the EPDM membrane.

Explains commercial manager of Firestone, John McMullan: “Historically, there has been significant crossover between the GeoGard and PondGard products and we will continue to advise architects, engineers and contractors about the most appropriate solution for their specific project.

“As EPDM continues to grow in popularity as a more flexible and U/V stable alternative to PVC, HDPE and LLDPE liners, we are strategically focused on developing our market share for larger civil engineering, utilities and construction projects by simplifying the supply chain. In this way, we can ensure that contractors have the product they need on site in the right quantity and within the right timeframe.”

Available in widths up to 15.25 metres and up to 61m in length, GeoGard is a ‘built to last’ solution for applications as diverse as irrigation reservoirs, fire reservoirs, storm water attenuation, artificial wetlands and waste water reservoirs. Suitable for installation even at low temperatures, the membrane is flexible enough for installation in complex shapes or on undulating ground, is chemically stable with approval for use with fish life and exhibits excellent chemical resistance.

John McMullan adds: “Our distributor network will continue to offer both PondGard and GeoGard but, by developing closer relationships with specifiers and contractors for GeoGard installations, we will be able to offer earlier technical support engagement for more complex projects, ensuring the most effective, long-term solution.”

Why age alone shouldn’t define local government leadership

Age should never define leadership in local government, says Graeme McDonald, Managing Director of Solace. Instead, councils should invest in inclusive, skills-based development for officers and councillors to deliver effective public services.
