New figures have revealed just 18 councils have energy efficient housing stock, laying bare the challenge of tackling the climate emergency for local authorities.

Figures collected by non-profit organisation Climate Emergency UK showed only 18 councils that own or manage their own housing have 90% of their properties at EPC [energy performance certificate] grade C or above.

It comes just days after Prime Minister Rishi Sunak scrapped a number of climate change targets, including a requirement for private landlords in England and Wales to upgrade their properties to EPC C by 2028 - moving it back by seven years.

The EPC rating system grades properties from A to G on their energy efficiency, with A being the most efficient.

About 40 councils reported having less than half their stock reaching EPC C, including Barking & Dagenham LBC and Birmingham City Council.

The worst performing council was reportedly Mansfield City Council, with just 2% of its homes making the mark.
