Extra £15.5m for bodies offering advice during downturn

The Cabinet Office has made an extra £15.5m available to small organisations providing vital consumer services – such as debt management and employment advice – in the 50 areas of England most at risk of increased deprivation during the recession.
The cash, held in the targeted support fund, will mostly be used to support small, third sector organisations, such as charities and voluntary groups helping vulnerable communities to tackle the downturn.
This is in addition to the £130m which has already been committed to such ‘grass-roots’ organisations.
Under the plan, organisations in Birmingham, considered the area most at risk of increased deprivation during the recession, will receive £1m.
Other areas which stand to benefit include Durham – which will receive £668,000; Kingston-Upon-Hull – £471,000; Liverpool – £439,000; and Manchester – £435,000.
