Environment: Birmingham plans tree preservation

Birmingham City Council is making preparations to safeguard more than a million trees in the city.

The local authority has proposed a revised tree policy that will seek the protection and safeguarding of the city’s trees. The policy also looks at an awareness campaign to promote the importance of trees and the clarification of the legal responsibilities and liabilities of them.

Martin Mullaney, Birmingham’s cabinet member for leisure, sports and culture, said the importance of trees to the overall wellbeing of the city could not be underestimated.

‘Trees have a real impact on our daily lives and also bring a multitude of environmental benefits. They reduce the potential for flood and drought, absorb greenhouse gases and of course provide habitats for wildlife.’ The council’s full cabinet will consider the revised policy later this month.
