Newcastle City Council members have awarded the Freedom of Newcastle to Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The council decided to grant the city’s highest honour to Howe following the club’s historic Carabao Cup win over Liverpool in March at Wembley – the team’s first domestic trophy win for 70 years.

The motion was put forward by council leader Karen Kilgour, a lifelong supporter and a season ticket holder at St James’ Park, 48 hours after the Wembley match concluded.

‘Eddie Howe will forever be a hero to Newcastle United supporters for his achievements during his time at the club so far, and I’m thrilled members recognised the significance of his contribution to our city by approving to bestow upon him the Honorary Freedom of Newcastle,’ she said.
