Eastbourne Borough Council, the local authority behind a recent Westminster summit on the temporary-accommodation crisis, will today vote on declaring a housing emergency.
Earlier this month, the leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Cllr Stephen Holt, warned that the coming weeks will 'make or break' local public services.
This followed a meeting of 50 council leaders in Westminster organised by Eastbourne BC that warned of a ‘national crisis’ if more isn’t done to help councils meet the rising temporary accommodation costs.
Cllr Holt said the council is currently spending 49p in every £1 of council tax collected on temporary accommodation.
The motion to declare a housing emergency describes the temporary-accommodation crisis as an ‘existential threat’ to local government.
