Councils and MPs this week expressed dismay at the Home Office’s ‘top-down diktat’ plan to double asylum seeker numbers at many hotels.

The chaos surrounding the Government’s troubled asylum policy was laid bare this week as senior Home Office officials were hauled in front of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

Home Office officials confirmed the number of asylum seekers housed in expensive hotels could increase significantly over the short-term despite a Government pledge to end hotel use.

MPs cited recent letters sent to them by local authority leaders, which detailed major concerns over the Home Office’s attempts to increase the number of asylum seekers in each hotel room.
