The number of applications seeking authorisation to deprive children of their liberty has increased following the launch of a dedicated court for England and Wales.
There were 1,389 applications relating to 1,249 children in the court’s first year of operation, according to a report by the Nuffield Family Justice Observatory.
The closest comparable figures prior to the launch of the national Deprivation of Liberty (DoL) court showed there were just 103 applications in 2017-18 in England and 579 in 2020-21.
