The iconic London tower block whose exterior served as Nelson Mandela House in the opening credits of Only Fools and Horses is set to be demolished in 2027.
Harlech Tower in Ealing will be knocked down as part of an £850m scheme to redevelop the South Acton estate.
The estate was developed after World War Two but ‘quickly fell into decline’, Ealing Council said.
From 1981, the ‘shabby’ Harlech Tower was used for exterior shots of Nelson Mandela House, the Peckham home of Del Boy, Rodney and Uncle Albert in the popular British sitcom Only Fools and Houses.
Under Ealing Council's plans, the South Acton estate will be redeveloped into Acton Gardens, with around 3,500 new ‘energy-efficient’ homes, more than 40% of which will be let at social rent levels.
The scheme is set to double the number of homes on the estate, with several one-bed properties replaced with family homes. Most current residents have requested one of the new homes.
Ealing Council said: ‘The decanting of Harlech Tower’s residents so it can be demolished is provisionally earmarked for 2027.’
