Cultural delight

The Northern Ireland city of Londonderry was selected as the UK’s first city of culture this week, at a ceremony in Liverpool.

It beat off competition from Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield for the title.

Culture minister Ed Vaizey said: ‘The panel were unanimous in their recommendation because of the compelling cultural programme, the way it seeks to address the city’s past and the enthusiasm of the city and its supporters.’
