Croydon Council is set to acquire part of Peep Show’s ‘Apollo House’, home of characters Mark and Jeremy, to house homeless people on a temporary basis.
The London borough council will enter a 999-year lease of the property, called Zodiac House, which it will use to provide 73 housing units in a bid to reduce its use of more expensive temporary accommodation.
Croydon said it expected the project would reduce costs by £987,000 a year.
Funding will come from the Right to Buy scheme, £5.1m of government funding, and borrowing.
Executive mayor Jason Perry said: ‘This is another step in addressing the significant homelessness challenges we face.
‘The increased demand for services and shortage of accommodation means we have to look at doing things differently, and the purchase of Zodiac House is a good example of this.’
A move-in date for the new flats has not yet been set.
