Birmingham has been named the top-performing UK city for new businesses outside of the south east, in a historic year for start-ups.
Research by StartUp Britain suggests Greater London saw the highest number of new businesses created over the past twelve months, with 184,671 new registrations.
Birmingham saw 18,337 new businesses registered with Companies House, above Manchester, which saw 13,054.
Also named in the top ten were Brighton, Glasgow, Bristol, Sheffield, Nottingham, Warrington and Edinburgh.
A total of 581,173 new businesses were registered over 2014, beating the previous record of 526,446 set in 2013.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics also indicate there has been a fall in the number of business failures, with numbers dropping out of registration falling 6% from 253,000 to 238,000 last year.
‘Starting a business is easier, quicker and cheaper than ever thanks to new technology,’ said chairman of think tank the Centre for Entrepreneurs, which runs StartUp Britain, Luke Johnson.
‘Entrepreneurs have higher profiles than in the past and are seen as role models. Traditional jobs for life have largely disappeared, as have occupational pensions.’
