A group of English and Welsh councils spent more than £60m on personal injury claim payouts between April 2021 and March 2024, new research found.

More than 100 councils provided data to Accident Claims Advice which reveals that they faced over 30,000 compensation cases related to workplace injury, public accidents, road traffic collisions or even assault and abuse.

On average, claimants who had a case found in their favour during this period received an average sum of £1,693.81.

Over £16m was confirmed as being paid out across 10,266 personal injury claims in 2023/24.
