Two-thirds of local authorities have reduced the size of their allotments as more people apply for a plot of land.
A survey of councils by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) has found that the demand for allotments remains high.
Just over half (55%) of the 64 councils that responded to the survey said that they have 100-400 people on their allotment waiting lists, 100 being the greater proportion.
APSE’s survey also found that there has been a reduction in the size of plots, which they suggest could be a reflection of policies to reduce waiting lists and to make plots more manageable.
Nearly two-thirds of councils (64%) have cut the size of their allotments – and just 21% provide old-style 240 square yard plots.
