The Government has announced grants totalling up to £53m for councils to provide housing support to people in drug and alcohol treatment.
It says the grants to 28 local authorities across England will help break the cycle of addiction and improve health outcomes.
It is part of a £780m 10-year strategy to rebuild drug treatment and recovery services with new commissioning standards to drive transparency and consistency.
The new scheme means people in alcohol and drug recovery will have access to housing support tailored to meet their needs.
It will aim to help people create sustainable and long-term recovery by maintaining independent living.
Essex will receive the biggest grant of £2,206,250 followed by Lancashire with £1,885,436 and Kent which will be given £1,853,719.
Health and social care secretary Steve Barclay said: ‘We’re supporting those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction by addressing the link between improved treatment outcomes and a stable home.
‘This £53m funding, targeted to local authorities with the greatest need, will support the Government’s ambition to reduce overall drug use to a historic 30-year low.’
