Councils made £270m from parking fines last year

Councils generated £270m in parking tickets last year, according to figure uncovered through the Freedom of Information Act.

The figures, published by The Mirror, show that the number of parking tickets issued by councils has nearly doubled since 2009, with drivers being hit by a ticket every four seconds.

Westminster City Council issued the most tickets overall, receiving £23m in fines from 458,388 tickets. Alum Rock Road in Birmingham raised the most money from parking fines outside of the capital, with £252,024 being paid for 7,527 tickets.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the AA’s Paul Watters said: ‘Councils say they don’t profit from tickets but many do and there’s a temptation to increase fines. They should make spaces available in return’
