Tower Hamlets Council members have granted planning permission to media mogul Richard Desmond's controversial £1bn development scheme on the Westferry Printworks site on the Isle of Dogs.
The project, undertaken by Mr Desmond’s Westferry Developments, will include a total of 1,358 homes, 35% of them affordable, with a 31-storey tower, a 1,200-capacity secondary school, retail space and restaurants.
The development scheme was first proposed nine years ago and has since seen significant revisions.
Commenting on the decision, a Tower Hamlets Council spokesperson said: ‘This is a major regeneration scheme on a currently disused site, which will help breathe new life into this historic area of London Docklands. Construction is expected to start later this year and will be completed in four phases over six to eight years.’
