Growing numbers of councils are securing injunctions preventing the use of hotels to house asylum seekers as ministers struggle to deal with an increasing backlog.

The Home Office this week continued to insist that the use of hotels was ‘a short-term solution’ as up to a dozen councils are thought to be threatening legal action.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is among the latest to open legal proceedings against the Government’s use of hotels, complaining of a lack of consultation by the Home Office, with Ipswich BC also securing an interim injunction this week.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s legal objection to the Government’s plans to house asylum seekers in a hotel is due to be heard at the High Court later today.
