Tributes have been paid after a council worker was killed after being hit by a falling tree during Storm Eunice.

Wexford County Council said the employee was fatally injured whilst attending the scene of a fallen tree on Friday.

A statement from the council said: 'It is with deep sadness and regret that Wexford County Council confirms that one of our employees was fatally injured earlier today in a workplace accident.

'The accident occurred as the employee attended the scene of a fallen tree in the North Wexford area.'

It is thought that at least four people have died due to Storm Eunice, one of the worst storms to hit the UK in decades. It also caused hundreds of thousands of homes to without power and caused widespread disruption to travel and public services.

Initial analysis by PwC UK has shown the insurance costs of the storm could be as much as £350m due to property damage, business and travel disruption.
