The carcass of a 30-tonne whale has been removed from a beach in East Yorkshire, the local authority has confirmed.

The 17m long fin whale died last Tuesday after becoming stranded on Bridlington's South Beach.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council has confirmed that the animal’s body was loaded onto a truck Friday evening and taken away.

The spokesperson said: ‘We’d like to say a big thank you to our contractors and our council staff for doing an absolutely outstanding job.

‘This was an incredibly challenging and difficult operation – the largest of its kind we’ve ever dealt with.

‘This was a really sad incident for all involved. The whale was about 17 metres long and weighed around 25-30 tonnes.’
