Tower Hamlets Council's strategic planning committee has voted to reject the Chinese government's plans for a ‘super embassy’.

The proposed embassy would be 700,000 sq ft and would be located on the former Royal Mint site near Tower Bridge.

A Tower Hamlets Council spokesperson said the plans were rejected due to concerns about ‘resident and tourist safety’.

The spokesperson said: ‘The Strategic Development Committee considered the planning and listed building consent applications for the redevelopment of the Royal Mint Court complex to provide a new home for the Chinese Embassy this evening.

‘A range of concerns were discussed at committee, raised by objectors, ward members and members of the committee. The committee resolved to reject the application due to concerns over the impact on resident and tourist safety, heritage, police resources and the congested nature of the area. The application will now be referred to the Mayor of London before the final decision is issued.’
