The City of Edinburgh Council’s leader has resigned after Police Scotland revealed it was investigating a report of ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

Cammy Day, who has led the council since May 2022, was administratively suspended by the Labour Party pending the outcome of the probe.

Scotland’s Sunday Mail spoke to two Ukrainian refugees who said they received messages from Cllr Day via social media and dating sites, with the councillor said to have asked their sexual preferences and to meet up for dates.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said the force received a report of inappropriate behaviour on 22 October, with inquiries ongoing ‘to establish the full circumstances’.

Following calls for his resignation, Cllr Day announced on Monday afternoon that he was stepping down.

He said: ‘The recent commentary on my personal life is detracting from the important work this Labour-led council does for the people of Edinburgh.

‘I have yet to be contacted by the police but want to reiterate that I will cooperate fully with their ongoing enquiries.’

Nominations for a new leader will be made at the next council meeting on 19 December.
