Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is inviting local community groups to step forward and take on some of its assets, as part of preparations for upcoming local government reorganisation (LGR).
The Surrey council’s new Community Asset Transfer Programme aims to ensure valued community facilities remain in local hands from April 2027, when Surrey’s borough and district councils are set to be replaced by unitary authorities.
The programme invites voluntary groups, charities, and social enterprises to take on ownership or long-term leases of public assets such as halls, sports pavilions and allotments. However, properties essential to delivering core council services or generating significant income will remain under council control.
Cllr Ben Green, Portfolio Holder for Finance, Assets and Governance, said the initiative would protect local access to important facilities through community stewardship.
A two-stage application process will assess proposals for sustainability and public benefit, with training and grant support available.
