Tewkesbury Borough Council has pushed back changing its name amid delays to the Government’s devolution white paper.

The local authority is due to change its name to North Gloucestershire Borough Council, which it said more accurately reflects the geographical area it covers.

But plans have been delayed amid uncertainty about how the devolution white paper, which was due at the end of November, will impact the role of district councils.

Council leader Richard Stanley said: ‘If the Government’s white paper mandates that Gloucestershire’s local government structure requires reorganisation in the next two to three years, then we recognise that changing our name now would not be an efficient use of funds.’

The council said if the policy document did not impact its plans, it would launch its name change next March.
