Local authority leaders have welcomed reports that the Government is planning to ban disposable vapes.

Cllr David Fothergill, chairman of the Local Government Association’s (LGA) Community Wellbeing Board, said a ban on the single use e-cigarettes would help protect the health of children and reduce litter.

‘We are very pleased that the Government has listened to councils and appears to be preparing plans to ban disposable vapes,’ he said.

‘Single use vapes blight our streets as litter, are a hazard in our bin lorries, and are expensive and difficult to deal with in our recycling centres. Their colours, flavours and advertising are appealing to children and are a risk to the health of young people.

‘It is important that a ban is brought in at pace. Disposable vapes are an inherently unsustainable products, meaning an outright ban will prove the most effective solution to this problem.’

Five million single-use vapes are thrown away in the UK every week, an almost four-fold increase on last year, according to research from Material Focus.
