Proposals to increase the number of Cumberland Council councillors by around 20% have been backed.
The council is in discussion with the Local Government Boundary Commission for England over potential changes to its size and make up ahead of the next local election in 2027.
This week the executive committee agreed to recommend the number of councillors be increased from 46 to 55.
Increasing the size of the council will ‘achieve an effective balance between representation and efficiency’, according to the committee’s report.
It will also enable councillors to ‘engage with their communities in a meaningful way to support, represent and communicate with their residents, and to ensure this informs strategic decision-making.’
