An independent panel has recommended Cornwall’s councillors should receive an allowance rise of more than £1,600.
A report published by a three member Independent Remuneration Panel has advised their pay should go from £12,249.68 to £13,910.54 - an increase of 13.56%.
It would be the councillors first pay rise in four years.
One of the main principles behind the panel’s decision was to ensure the allowance was not a deterrent to potential candidates from diverse and under-represented groups.
‘The panel’s main aim has been to make sure that people from all walks of life feel they can stand for the Council, irrespective of their financial circumstances” said Margaret de Valois, the panel’s chair.
‘It is vital that all groups in society are reflected in the make-up of the Council and we wanted to make sure that the level of the allowance did not deter some people from standing for election.’
The recommendations will be considered at a meeting of the full council on 17 May and, if accepted, will be implemented after the 2017 unitary elections.
