Brentwood Borough Council has launched an investigation after residents who had undergone a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) were hospitalised.

The Essex authority said it was ‘concerned with the undertaking of the non-surgical aesthetic procedure and the aftercare provided by an individual and associated companies in Brentwood’.

It banned the companies from performing the procedure until the risks have been ‘controlled’.

People were taken to hospital after undergoing a liquid BBL, an aesthetic procedure that involves injecting hyaluronic acid fillers into the buttocks.

The treatment has left some people with ‘excruciating pain’, discomfort and infections.

Brentwood said it was working with other local authorities facing the issue as well as national agencies and experts.

The council warned that the practice is unlicensed and unregulated, and urged people to research the procedure extensively, be aware that it must take place in a sterile clinical environment, and exercise caution if the cost is lower than the market average.
