Derbyshire County Council is planning to move from its headquarters in Matlock to a smaller office in a bid to tackle a £33m overspend.

The council is set to consider several proposals aimed at balancing the books, including changes to care services, residential facilities, and library and heritage services.

The local authority’s Matlock HQ is forecasted to cost nearly £2m to run for 2023-24 and has an average occupancy level of only 27%.

A report to be considered by Cabinet next week describes the option of staying in the historic building as ‘not financially sustainable’.

Council leader Cllr Barry Lewis commented: ‘No council leader ever wants to be in a position where they are putting forward cost-saving measures of this nature but along with councils up and down the country the pressures are huge, and simply beyond our control.

‘We have to do everything we can to balance our books and ensure we continue to provide the services our residents rely on and deserve, and to do that we have no choice but to put forward these proposals which, if agreed, could help us to achieve that.’
