Cardiff Council is using a specialist thermal road repair machine to fix potholes and damaged surfaces following an unprecedented number of highway defects caused by last winter's wet weather and cold snaps.
The machine heats the existing road surface before applying new material, cutting carbon emissions by up to 85% compared to traditional dig-and-fill methods while reusing existing material and creating a stronger bond between old and new surfaces, according to the council.
Cllr Ed Stubbs, Cabinet Member for Frontline Services, said the technology allows for high-quality, longer-lasting repairs while reducing disruption, though he stressed there is no single fix for every pothole, with cut-and-seal and temporary repairs still used where appropriate.
