A default 20mph speed limit for built up roads would be eight times cheaper than authority by authority, according to figures released by a campaign group.
20’s Plenty for Us said a national default 20mph speed limit in Scotland would cost £2m to implement, as opposed to around £17m if adopted council by council.
It said fewer signs are needed for a national default, arguing the £2m was only 0.3% of Scotland’s trunk road capital budget.
Rod King, campaign director of 20’s Plenty for Us said: ‘A Scottish national default 20mph limit is the most cost effective way forward.
‘We recommend local authority members lobby Government Ministers to save overall road budgets and taxpayers money by announcing a 20mph Scottish National Default.’
