The Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) has found Camden Council to be in breach of its consumer standards, with an investigation revealing that thousands of council homes did not comply with fire safety regulation.

The regulator found more than 9,000 overdue fire safety actions in council-owned homes.

The investigation also revealed that more than 9,000 homes did not have a smoke alarm installed and around 4,000 had no fitted carbon monoxide detector.

Kate Dodsworth, chief of regulatory engagement at RSH, said: ‘This is unacceptable and has put tenants at potential risk of harm. The council needs to act urgently to put things right, and we will scrutinise it closely as it does this.’

Cllr Georgia Gould, leader of Camden Council, said: ‘There is nothing more important than the safety of our residents and we are taking this notice very seriously.’

She added: ‘I won’t be content until every action is complete and that’s what our teams are working on delivering right now.’
