Cambridge residents were confronted with the unexpected site of a car marked ‘polling station’ when they went out to vote this morning.

The city council’s electoral services team resorted to using the boot of the electric vehicle after finding they were unable to get into Milton Road Library.

In a post shared to X at 7:14am, the team shared a photo of the impromptu polling booth and said: ‘Hopefully we'll be in soon but for now our polling staff are doing a great job ensuring early voters can still cast their vote!’

An update shared an hour later revealed that polling stations in the library were up and running and thanked staff who had ‘remained calm and carried on’.

Residents are voting for 14 of the 42 seats on Cambridge City Council and the Cambridgeshire Police and Crime Commissioner.
