Local authorities have suspended two busking pitches in Leicester Square.
Westminster City Council has confirmed that all street performers, including both licensed and unlicensed buskers, must abide by the new rules. Those who breach the regulations now risk being fined, being stripped of their busking licenses or having their equipment confiscated.
A council spokesperson said the local authorities were given ‘no choice’ and ‘have a legal obligation to act.’
‘This is categorically not a ban on street performers in Westminster. Our next step is to comply with the ruling by suspending street performance pitches in Leicester Square, consider the court ruling and find a fair solution.’
The suspension comes as a response to the judge’s ruling on Global Radio’s noise complaint case against Westminster City Council, which went to court on the 26 March.
