Councillors at Birmingham City Council have signed off on £300m of cuts over two years and dramatic council tax increases.

Council members have approved the local authority’s budget which includes what the council leader described as ‘unprecedented’ cuts.

The £300m of budget cuts are required if the council is to access over £1.2bn of exceptional financial support loans from the Government.

The council, which declared effective bankruptcy in September, will also make 600 council workers redundant.

Council leader John Cotton said he ‘unreservedly apologised to the people of the city’.

‘I am under no illusion what this budget will mean for our communities,’ he said.

‘The decisions we must make here today will have a lasting impact on every single neighbourhood in Birmingham and that weighs heavily on me.’
