Birmingham City Council has submitted an application to the High Court seeking an injunction to control unauthorised attachments of flags on the city's highways.

The council says putting up and repeatedly reinstalling flags has affected the public, and that removal work has at times led to harassment, intimidation or obstruction.

Citing the evidence gathered, the council said it is now pursuing injunctive action through the courts, stressing the approach is not aimed at any particular community, belief or viewpoint.

Cabinet member Cllr Jane Baston said the council is taking a ‘lawful, proportionate and evidence-led approach,’ prioritising public safety, staff and contractor welfare, and community cohesion.

The move follows a similar injunction secured by Oxfordshire County Council against unauthorised flag attachments on lampposts.
