Bradford Council has brought in a new interim director of finance as part of its efforts to avoid declaring effective bankruptcy.

The local authority is forecasting budget pressures of £73m in the current financial year and £103.6m in 2024-25.

The new interim director of finance, Steven Mair, has worked with a number of councils experiencing financial distress, including Slough Borough Council and Thurrock Council.

A spokesperson for Bradford Council said Mr Mair has ‘extensive experience’ dealing with ‘successful financial and change management projects across several local authorities.’

‘We are very pleased to welcome Steven to Bradford and are sure that he will bring his wealth of experience to the district and work with officers and members to support us at this financially challenging time.’
