Birmingham waste services hit by industrial action

As the so-called ‘waste crisis’ wound down in most parts of the country this week, the situation in Birmingham took a turn for the worse, as ongoing industrial action hit the city council’s efforts to clear a backlog of waste.

Cllr Timothy Huxtable, cabinet member for transportation and regeneration, criticised a ‘go-slow’ approach adopted by staff working to rule. He said: ‘They are using guerrilla tactics and deliberately leaving rubbish in certain areas which they know will create the most inconvenience for the public.’

Cllr Huxtable added that the local authority had teamed up with the public to identify where rubbish had been left, so a ‘casual workforce’ could collect it.
