Birmingham to launch Clean Air Zone in June 2021

Birmingham City Council has confirmed the government-mandated Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is now scheduled to launch on 1 June 2021.

Birmingham’s CAZ was supposed to be introduced this summer but the council was forced to delay due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The scheme will mean that owners of the most polluting vehicles - which account for a quarter of those on Birmingham's roads - will need to pay a daily charge to drive through the CAZ.

Cllr Waseem Zaffar, the council's cabinet member for transport and environment, said: 'We have been working closely with officials at the Joint Air Quality Unit and ministers to agree a new launch date for the government-mandated Clean Air Zone.

'Poor air quality remains a public health risk and a Clean Air Zone provides the city with an effective tool for tackling this issue in the shortest possible time.'

A CAZ is a part of a town or city where charges or fines are introduced in order to discourage the use of polluting vehicles. The aim is to improve air quality.
