Birmingham sets ‘bold’ climate targets

Birmingham City Council has published its own declaration on climate change, revealing a number of bold targets concerning sustainability.

The Birmingham Declaration on Climate Change states that by 2015, there will be at least 10 ‘low carbon communities’ in the city, following in the footsteps of the Summerfield eco-neighbourhood.
It adds one-tenth of homes will have retrofit insulation, the council’s energy consumption will be reduced by one-quarter, and half the electricity used will come from renewable sources. The council also pledges to roll out a network of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and link homes to district heating systems.
Deputy leader, Cllr Paul Tilsley, has called on other local authorities to follow suit.
