Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby has rejected calls for a referendum on an elected mayor and challenged opponents to find the 35,000 supporters they would need for a petition to trigger a local vote on the issue.
In a letter to the Birmingham Mail which has been campaigning for a referendum, he said: ‘Greater devolution of central government powers not one person with a new title is what our city needs to realise its full potential.’
