Birmingham launches free super-fast Wi-Fi

Super-fast free Wi-Fi is now available in Birmingham city centre, offering visitors unlimited data services across a 2.5 square mile zone.

Launched by Birmingham City Council and Virgin Media Business in partnership with Global Reach Technology, the service will allow people to download content and surf the Internet without usage limits.

Already rolled out in the busiest parts of the city, further access points will be deployed to extend coverage in the coming weeks.

BirminghamCllr McKay said Birmingham had become ‘the best connected city in the UK.’

Access points have been mounted on street furniture across the city centre, connecting back into Virgin Media Business’ nationwide fibre optic network.

Cabinet member for a green, safe and smart city at Birmingham City Council, Cllr James McKay, said: ‘We’re delighted to be able to offer this unrivalled connectivity in some the best-loved spaces in the city, particularly as more visitors arrive in the coming weeks to enjoy the Frankfurt Christmas Market and other festive celebrations.

‘This announcement builds on our connectivity plans for the city which aim to ensure that our citizens and businesses have access to the highest quality and affordable Internet services, and establishes Birmingham as the best connected city in the UK.’

Director of marketing at Virgin Media Business, Duncan Higgins, said: ‘Birmingham is a prototype of the super-powered, connected city, which is not only offering free internet services to all, but also accelerating a revolution in the mobile broadband experience.’
