Birmingham City Council's finances have been described as ‘dire' by commissioners as it grapples with a budget gap of up to £80m next year.

Efforts to close the gap for 2025-26 have been thrown off course by the emergence of tens of millions of pounds of extra costs, according to a report to senior councillors today.
