Birmingham chief’s appointment sparks political row

Appointing Stephen Hughes as Birmingham City Council’s new chief executive has reportedly caused political problems within the council. According to the Birmingham Post, Labour members of the appointment panel preferred an alternative candidate. Cllr Alan Rudge, cabinet member for equalities and human resources said a ‘rigorous’ recruitment and selection process had been undertaken. The decision to recommend Mr Hughes as the preferred candidate was ‘the view of the majority of the duly-appointed JNC panel’. Former council leader and Labour member Sir Albert Bore was unavailable for comment.
