Birmingham chief executive to retire

The chief executive of Birmingham City Council has announced he is to retire in the new year.

The council confirmed today that Stephen Hughes will leave the authority in February 2014, when he reaches 60 years old.

Council leader, Sir Albert Bore, also announced a consultation on restructuring the senior management team.

'Radical restructuring of the council as a whole, to meet the changing services it delivers, means less departments and less senior management,' said Sir Albert.

'Combined with the departure of Stephen Hughes, this provides us with an opportunity to new change the shape of the council.'
