Birmingham agrees pay structure

Birmingham City Council has introduced a seven-grade pay structure to reward ‘competence and output’.

The new structure replaces the current 30+ rates and aims to put right inequalities in the existing system.

‘This new structure is about fairness to staff and to the Council tax payer, both benefit.’ said Councillor Alan Rudge, Cabinet Member for Equalities and Human Resources.

About 42% of the council's staff will receive increases, while 12% will lose (reducing to 7% after protection). Those who lose will have protected salaries to April 2010 to cushion the blow.
