Birmingham CC leader’s future in question over bin dispute

Birmingham City Council leader was battling for his political survival today as he faced down calls to quit over the long-running bin dispute.

The MJ understands that a leadership challenge is in full preparation, with three Labour councillors vying to replace Cllr Clancy but the group split on who should stand against him.

Last week the council announced it was issuing redundancies to protect its legal and financial position but there would be no job losses.

Cllr Clancy agreed to the move recommended by officers despite striking an alternative deal with trade union Unite.

A Labour group meeting last night is believed to have ended in acrimony, with a motion of confidence in Cllr Clancy’s leadership expected to be tabled next week.
